Aleksandra Słyż

Tonarium/Studiobühne

Aleksandra Słyż is a Polish composer. She holds degrees from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the Poznań Academy of Music, and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

In her compositions, she explores connections between acoustic and synthetic sounds. This process is often rooted in rational tuning systems, through which she constructs rich, complex drone structures that highlight the power of microtonal, electroacoustic tensions. Interactive sonification systems are another major part of her artistic practice. Between 2017 and 2022, Słyż conducted artistic research involving practical experiments on movement sonification and types of interaction.

Her works have been presented at prestigious contemporary and experimental music festivals and in major venues including Rewire Festival, CTM, Aarhus Festival, Unsound, Warsaw Autumn, ORF musikprotokoll, The Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Fylkingen, Alice Tully Hall, Ancienne Belgique, and Stadtcasino Basel.

Aleksandra’s compositions have been performed by exceptional contemporary orchestras and ensembles such as the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Sinfonietta, the Sinfonietta Cracovia, the Orchestra of Futurist Noise Intoners, and the Spółdzielnia Muzyczna contemporary ensemble.

In 2025, her composition Suspended in Ratios was recommended in both the general and the “under 30” categories at the 71st International Rostrum of Composers. That year, she was also invited by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and London’s The Wapping Project as the first artist to create new works for the legendary instruments of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio, unused for over two decades and never before performed live. The works The Long Pause Gives Way and The Long Pause Gives Way II were presented at the Sonics & Scenics festival in Warsaw in 2025.

As part of the Tonarium exhibition, Aleksandra Słyż will premiere a new piece for this instrument.
