Workshop - Sukandar Kartadinata

Zirkuszelt / circus tent

Sukandar Kartadinata is an omni-focused instrument builder who navigates between traditional craft and modern technologies. His designs are driven by the needs of individual musicians and artists — needs that are typically more specific than commercial offerings and more practical than academic research.

Some common themes in his work over the last three decades include spatialization, sensors, digital signal processing, embedded designs, and how to mediate between physical and virtual domains.

Recently he’s returned to his guitar roots, revisiting technologies such as pitch-tracking, sustainers, and polyphonic string processing, while also exploring new directions like adjustable tuning systems, CNC-based fabrication, and digital signal transmission.

As a guitar player Sukandar draws from his classical guitar background, which influences both the playing styles of his musical practice, as well as his electric guitar designs — which tend to adopt certain idiosyncrasies such as nylon strings, wide string-spacing, and flat fretboards. Beyond that his interests are in improvisation and extended playing techniques.
